How Google Can Kill Your Job Application

Nov. 21, 2009

Are you aware that a smart employer uses Google to see what is on-line about the three top job candidates on his desk?

If an employer were to do this to you, what would he find?

Have you used Google lately to see what pops up in the first ten entries? I suggest that you do.

Think about your Facebook or MySpace entries.

You may find that you don't want all of the links publicly available. Can you lock these pages to a "friends only" page?

Can you remove a page? You can use Google to find out. Ask about "how to remove a page" from a public site.

The Web is permanent. Pages are kept on Archives.org's "Way Back Machine" that go back to the mid- 1990s.

Teenagers are posting things about themselves and each other that they will regret for 50 years. The Web isn't a secret diary. It's a public scrapbook.
