Salman Khan Takes Apart SOPA/PIPA in One Flawless Teaching Video
Jan. 20, 2012
Salman Khan of Khan Academy has produced the best presentation I have seen on SOPA/PIPA.
Here he demonstrates what a great teacher he is. He shows the power of a simple tool: a screencast video. We never see his face. We see a simple presentation on screen, which he narrates.
When you are through with this video, you will understand how close we came to legalized censorship. It had the blessing of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which unanimously supported it.
Because of resistance by Wikipedia, Reddit, Google, and other sites, there was a mass protest of millions of Web users that scared off Congress. I wrote about this here: http://teapartyeconomist.com/?p=2451.
The federal government could still take these actions -- just not legally. But what happened on January 18 burned Congress's power-grasping fingers. The government now knows that it faces organized resistance if it ever tries something like this. It was a major victory.
As Khan says, if there is provable cause, the victims can sue the copyright violators. Existing laws are sufficient, as the recent Megaupload shut-down shows.
