Ten Steps to Get Hired After You Know You Are Getting Fired

It's traumatic to get fired. You aren't sure how long you can last without your paycheck. That's why you need to take step one.

1. Find out how long you can go before you are forced to take any job

This is crucial. You must make a careful inventory of your monthly expenses and income other than your job. If you have no other income, you now know that you must never again become this dependent on a salary. Set a net loss limit to your job search. Do not violate this limit. Monitor your expenses from the day you get sacked.

2. Update your resumé.

Your resumé is out of date. You probably don't know how to write one. Find out. I cover this here: //www.garynorth.com/public/1084.cfm

3. Start calling your contacts.

If you know you have been sacked, or soon will be, make no bones about it. Let every contact know that you are back in the job market. Who you know may be more important than what you know.

4. Get a Web site.

If you have no Web site, you are in trouble. It means you aren't an expert. You must become an expert. How? By putting up a Web site. If you must learn on a blog, fine. But get on-line. You need this to prove that you are on top of your field, even if you're not.

5. Join a service club.

Service clubs are basic to making contacts. If you are not a member, you should be. Find one that is close to your heart. Volunteer. Keep volunteering after you get your job.

6. Start tithing.

That's right: 10% of your income. But you need income, now that you're losing your job. Tithe anyway. But what about bills? Tithe and spend less. Tithing will show you and God that you are serious. Then continue to tithe after you get your new job.

7. Upgrade your skills.

If you have to go to night school, do it. If you must spend three hours at the library and all day Saturday, do it. You must catch up. Whatever skills you possess, they can be improved.

8. Use an on-line job search site.

Monster.com is the most famous, but don't limit yourself. Use more than one. If there is a specialized one in your field, use it.

9. Consider a new career.

Your firing may be a wake-up call. Somehow you became less productive. Or you failed to see that your employer was less productive. Maybe you're bored. Maybe this boredom is killing you. What else would you like to do in life? Now is the best time to find out.

10. Pray.

That's right. Pray. If drunks can sober up in AA because of prayer, you may be able to get a job. It's a lot harder for an alcoholic to sober up than it is to get a job.
