The Federal Council of Churches was launched in 1908 by liberal American Protestants. John D. Rockefeller, Sr., provided about 5% of the initial funding. This ecumenical organization became the main promoter of the liberal social gospel, a mixture of liberal theology and welfare state (Progressive movement) political activism.
Until 1975, there was no detailed history of the organization that was written by an academic historian of distinctly anti-social gospel opinions. In that year, the conservative book publishing company, Arlington House, published Singer's book, The Unholy Alliance. Singer was the author of A Theological Interpretation of American History (1963). He was a professor of history at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania.
This book has been out of print for decades. I have made available this PDF.
