How extensive is NSA's monitoring? Very.

What can you do to reduce your visibility? More than most people think.

You cannot become invisible, digitally speaking, but you can becomes a lot less visible. They are like the locks on your doors. Locks cannot stop burglars 100% of the time, but they do make it cheaper for the burglars to break in next door.

Privacy-based communications companies are being set up outside the USA. They make it harder to be tracked inside the USA. There is also a layer of legal protection against search warrants. Foreign service providers are less likely to comply with warrants issued by U.S. agencies. The agencies must go through foreign courts. This gets expensive.
