My wife is a whiz at painting house interiors. On more than one occasion, she has been offered a full-time job by home repair outfits or professional painters.
This week, she hired a crew to paint the exterior of our house. This house is 14 years old. It needed paint.
Crucial is caulk. She bought a highly rated caulk.

Caulk is really cheap. But prices vary. You can pay $2.50 a tube. You can pay $4.00 ($3.30/tube for a case). She bought the best. It lasts twice as long: 25 years.
Why would anyone try to save money on paint or caulk by buying anything except the best? Labor is the main expense. That will cost you the same per gallon/tube, no matter what price you pay for paint and caulk. But if you can double the life of the paint and caulk by spending 50% more on them, why wouldn't you? Factor in labor costs. Then the extra money for paint and caulk is marginal.
