I've heard some disturbing rumblings out of some conservative quarters stating that the U.S. could safely run a convention to amend the Constitution, with no fear of a "run away" convention, because precedence and the rules will save us.
The other day I saw a Youtube video on this very subject presented by Phyllis Schlafly. She made a remark that sent chills up my spine, "the guy wielding the gavel has the power" and " I've seen every type of rule broken."
I saw this in the GOP caucuses. First, I'd like to tell you about the 2008 caucus held in our county. I'd like to, but I can't. There wasn't one. The local party, the guys with the gavel, thought there were too many Ron Paul supporters in the crowd. In complete violation of the rules they decided to just not open the venue at all.
In 2012 they decided to have the event. They stacked the caucus with their own supporters. We were attempting to do the same of course. I'm not crying foul here, the rules were mushy enough that that any warm body with a registration could show up. The problem was, there were many people there who did not understand the process and were just being coached by a group leader. The group with the biggest church bus won. When the gavel was handed over to the good old boys, they picked good old boys as delegates. No thought was given to the vote percentage in the primaries. No consideration was given to the desires of the people who showed up to vote for the primary delegates. The delegates were county good old boys who had put their time in. Who they were supporting for president was a cursory issue.
Imagine the "good old boys" of our country being handed a Constitutional Convention. They'll follow the rules when it suits them. If they can pack the event, they will. If they don't like the way things are going they can alter the rules at will.
If you think my county was an isolated case, review this. https://tinyurl.com/pnga2d3
