How to Learn a Foreign Language, Cheap

Gary North

Having a speaking knowledge of a foreign language is a major career-advancement tool.

You already have the #1 tool for learning a foreign language. It's right under your nose. You have overlooked it. But first. . . .

What's the very best way to learn a foreign language? Have your parents move to a foreign country when you're a year old. Then play with neighbor kids who speak the language. Speak English at home. Stay for 10 years.

But when you move home, you'll get rusty and forget.

Then there is Berlitz. It's expensive.

What is the cheapest way? Your DVD player.

Most recent DVD movies have separate foreign language sound tracks. Watch your favorite movie, since you already know the dialog well. Watch it with the dubbed sound track. Do this every night for a month. Then switch to a new movie. Do this with three movies.

But first, you must learn basic grammar. Buy any used college-level first-year textbook. Buy it on Amazon.

To learn vocabulary, buy a box of flash cards. Pay about $15. They are available at any college bookstore. Or order here:

After watching three movies, one per month, you will then be ready for Internet radio stations or cable TV or satellite TV foreign language networks. Locate them here:

It's mainly a matter of dedication. Then time. Money? Hardly any.
