You don't need 10,000 subscribers to have a successful e-letter. All you need is one subscriber: the person who is in a position to give you your dream job.
If you have a weekly letter, you remind people weekly that you have useful knowledge to share. Even twice a month is sufficient. It should not be less than monthly.
Keep it short: 5-6 short paragraphs.
Keep it useful. Report on what's happening now in your niche market. Save the reader time.
Provide Web links and other follow-up information.
If you have a Web site, provide its address.
There is inexpensive software for running a letter for less than $10 a month. You can buy the AutoResponse Plus program for $200, once, and have it hosted by www.Pugmarks.net. You will need your own website address. Get it at www.GoDaddy.com for $9 a year. Pugmarks.net will host it along with the AutoResponse Plus software.
You can pay PagePlop $20 a month to host a Lyris-based letter.
