Good news: there is less of it this year.

Here is a check list of steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of being hacked.

A major risk is this: someone opens new credit card accounts in your name, then spends. You don't receive notification. Your FICO score gets creamed when the bills are not paid.

The identity theft insurance firms are expensive. The best deal I have heard about is Identity Guard, purchased through Costco: $9.95/month.

Your homeowners' policy may allow you to buy identity theft insurance, but payment will be after the fact: no early warning. The company will pay to get your credit rating restored, as well as contact businesses that think you are the culprit. But read the fine print.
