We are all looking for a better deal when we're buying. What about when we're giving?

We should also be looking for a better deal. We should try to maximize the charitable bang for our bucks.

Here are three rules that I have used for decades.

1. Support small organizations that would struggle without a hard core of dedicated donors.

2. Support organizations that are meeting unique needs, i.e., those that have a "unique service proposition" (USP).

3. Participate in matching grants, either as a creator (big bucks) or as a fellow traveler.
