Have you started your blog site? If not, why not?

Blogging is a major way of communicating. You can post materials relating to anything: family, travel, book reviews, business, helpful hints.

One size doesn't fit all. Start a second blog when you are ready to go whole hog on something that interests you. For a brief discussion of types of blogs, click here:

It's free at Blogger: www.blogspot.com. Google owns Blogger, so it isn't going away soon. It may not be the best, but it will get you started. You can experiment with other software, such as Type Pad Pro, which is more powerful, but costs money. Here is a comparison:

There are others, such as WordPress:

It's also free.

I recommend a white page with black letters. This worked just fine for Big Jack Gutenberg.

With Blogger, you get 50 words on the masthead to describe your site. Here is your USP opportunity: "unique selling proposition." For example: "Melts in your mouth, not in your hand." Or: "When you absolutely, positively have to get it there the next day." I would recommend making a promise. Take a look at my masthead's USP.

If you sell anything, make sure you include a "privacy policy" statement and a "terms of use" statement. You can creatively borrow these from existing commercial web sites. This is basically lawyer babble. It keeps the Federal Trade Commission happy.

Don't use dated archives. Title them. Attract readers.

Provide useful information. Establish your credentials.

Update the site at least weekly.

Something is better than nothing. Getting started is better than waiting for perfection. You're the weak link, not the software. "Practice makes competent." (Perfect is for gurus.)

I have a Department devoted to blogging.
