Joseph McAuliffe is the brother of Terry McAuliffe, the Governor of Virginia. He was once a hard-core Christian Reconstructionist. Read his 2001 tribute to R. J. Rushdoony here.

Terry McAuliffe is the head of the Democratic National Committee. He was appointed to that position by Bill Clinton in the last days of the Clinton Administration. He is the most successful liberal political fund-raiser in America. CBS News ran a story on him titled, "The World's Greatest Fundraiser."McAuliffe, the brainchild behind the White House coffees and the Lincoln Bedroom sleepovers, is especially close to the Clintons. Estimates are that he has raised over $300 million for the Clintons over the last 10 years. He also offered them a $1.35 million loan guarantee to buy the house in Chappaqua. (After a storm of controversy the Clintons secured a loan from a commercial bank.)But, beyond being a fundraiser McAuliffe is a quintessential politician. He is the king of schmooze who works non-stop and who has patted every prominent back in the Democratic Party for the last 20 years. The Clintons are his most recent friends but he's a protégé of former Rep. Tony Coelho and House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt was in his wedding.

So have all of his peers. The second-biggest fundraiser is McAuliffe's brother, Joseph, who works for Pat Robertson. He, too, has those $100+ million years.
The money flows through the McAuliffe brothers like -- like what George C. Scott, acting as George S. Patton, said flowed through a goose (introductory speech in "Patton").
If you use Google to search for "Terry McAuliffe" and "Joseph McAuliffe," nothing comes up -- not one story. This story deserves a central-column in the WALL STREET JOURNAL, where they run the human interest stories. Most humans are interested in money, especially WALL STREET JOURNAL readers, and this is surely a money story.
One McAuliffe raised money for the Clintons. The other raises money for Pat Robertson. One is the head of the Democratic National Committee. The other was for years the pastor of a small church. One used to own $18 million in Global Crossing shares. The other once produced an audiotape program on how to get out of debt. Two brothers, two views of life, the same unique skill.
I have known Joseph for many years. I never knew who his brother was until a year ago, when I asked him if he had any copies of that course on debt-free living still available. (It wasn't.) Like the media, I never put 200 million and 200 million together.
Years later, Joseph told me of a remarkable incident. After the death of his father, both Clintons attended the funeral. Joseph began talking with Hillary. She asked what he was doing. He mentioned that he was working with Rushdoony. She responded: "He's the specialist in the history of American education." She was correct. In the world of Christian education, his book, The Messianic Character of American Education (1963), is a kind of Bible: unread but respected. That she would know of him in this regard is remarkable. Not many people on the Left know of him, and surely not his book on the history of the founders of statist education.
She is canny. Her brains are not a substitute for good judgment, but brains never are.
I think it would be a mistake to discount her. The old jokes about Hillary being the brains of the Clinton team were not wrong.
