Take a Nap

I have taken afternoon naps all of my adult life. I started in college in between classes. I lived in a dorm on campus. Sometimes I slept in the library.

My boss at my first full-time job was Leonard E. Read, founder of the Foundation for Economic Education. He took a nap after lunch. Therefore, I knew I could get away with this, too. The upstairs at FEE had bedrooms. I used one for about 30 minutes every afternoon.

I am efficient, but I need my afternoon nap. I have been self-employed since January 1, 1977, so I get to set my own schedule.

It turns out that there is now evidence that naps increase most people's productivity.

If you have a desk job, take 15 minutes to eat a sack lunch -- cheap -- and put your head on your desk to sleep. Use an inflatable pillow and earplugs. Put up a sign, if necessary: "This is my lunch break."

If anyone inquires, send a link to article in an email. It will be posted in the Tip of the Week archives. You can use my site's search engine to find it. Search for "afternoon nap."
