Windows 10 Rollback

Gary North - May 21, 2016

Microsoft says it will continue to provide security support for Windows 7 until January 14, 2020. That is good news. We get almost a 4-year stay of execution. Do you need to upgrade your old PC? Maybe not.

Microsoft says it will stop offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 in July. Good. Maybe they will stop bugging people to "upgrade now."

There is a way to upgrade now for free, but then roll back the upgrade. You get Windows 7.

Or maybe you get nothing.

My son fixes software that goes bad. Here is what he reports.

"I'm dealing with a situation right now where the windows 10 rollback has left a client with a computer that won't boot into windows. I wouldn't (and won't) do this upgrade process without having a 3rd party full image backup of my computer."

So, if you are really up for risk, and you have backed up your computer, you can try the free pre-2020 upgrade.

I recommend not doing it. Wait four years. Then pay $130 for the latest edition of Windows 10. It will be a better program by then. You can also delay your hike up the learning curve.
