One of my site members offered this tip on a forum. I have appropriated it in the name of The People.
I never get in any of my cars without a spare in my pocket. I don't need it often, but just once is enough. I really prefer a flat key and can keep the spare in my wallet. However, my new Ford Fusion Hybrid has a bulky key and comes with a spare. The book explained that losing one of the keys would require a long wait and several hundred $$ to replace. However, if one has two keys, a third can easily be made from those two by using some sequence described in the manual. So, I ordered a third key just in case that I lost one. I would be able to make up the spare again. This makes sense to me. We never plan to lock the car doors by pressing the lock button when the key is in the ignition, but it happens. So, by prepaying the cost of the key, $150, I am in the position of being able to save hundreds and the wait time for a new key.
Always have a plan B.
