Paying Off Credit Card Debt

Gary North - April 22, 2017

Credit cards are useful tools. But some people don't know how to discipline themselves. They are the primary targets of banks that issue credit cards.

Don't be one of them.

Your FICO score is affected by your debt-repayment history, meaning all debts, not just credit card debt. I recommend automatic payments whenever possible. Don't skip a payment by mistake.

The larger your debt limit on your card, the better. This is a case for owning several cards. Use them sparingly, but use them.

Key rule: don't let your debts exceed 9% of any card's loan limit.

People my age should not need a line of credit. They should pay off all credit card debts monthly. The companies call us "deadbeats."
