Beyond the Point of No Return, Liberals Still Won't Shut Up

Gary North - July 07, 2017

Stephen Hawking got a lot of public relations exposure when he recently said that the world is coming close to the point of no return on global warming. We read this:

Hawking Says We’re Getting Close To The Point Of No Return

Soon, no matter what we do, we'll no longer be able to reverse the catastrophic effects of global warming.

Global Warming

It’s the latest warning from renowned scientist Stephen Hawking: “We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible,” he told BBC. And because his brilliance is unquestionable, his warning, as far-fetched and extreme as it might seem, can’t simply be taken for granted.

This grim outlook didn’t just pop out of nowhere. It’s virtually a direct consequence of President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Treaty which Hawking says could ‘lead to irreversible climate change’ and could turn our planet into the next Venus — a planet with scorching temperatures of 250 degrees and an unforgiving environment with sulphuric acid as its rain.

President Trump did the world a great service when he announced that the United States will not participate in that great public relations stunt of the United Nations, the Paris Accords. Officially, these accords are known as the Paris Agreement.

The Paris Agreement is a toothless document. Representatives of 195 nations signed it. Why? Only because the United Nations is impotent.

If the United States government does not support the United Nations on something, the UN is little more than a bum on a street corner, holding out a tin cup. Yet even this metaphor is not accurate enough. The United Nations is a monkey dressed in a top hat and a tuxedo. It holds out a tin cup. The United States is the organ grinder.

The Paris Agreement has no negative sanctions. So, it is just a PR stunt. It is the latest gasp of the global warming movement. Trump pulled the plug on the whole thing. For the next 3 1/2 years, the Paris Accords are not going anywhere. Of course, they were never intended to go anywhere, other than into headlines on liberal news sites.

What this means is obvious: Trump has put the global warming movement on ice. This means that salvation by government intervention has been delayed by 3 1/2 years. But the global warming movement has been based on the premise that humanity is running out of time. In other words, we face the point of no return.

We are going to be 3 1/2 years closer to the point of no return in November 2020, when the clock of the Paris Accords really does stop ticking for the United States. At that point, we are officially out. Trump will still be President. That will be an election year.

PUTTING A DATE ON IT

There is no identifiable point of no return. If there were, the people who tell you that we're at the point of no return would give us a date. This would mean that they would have to sit down and shut up on the day after the point of no return. After all, after humanity is really beyond the point of no return, the only sensible thing to do is to prepare for the apocalypse individually. These promoters have no intention of preparing for the apocalypse individually. They only want to pressure politicians into expanding the power of the state's intervention into the free market economy, all in the name of preventing global warming. They are after political power. The story of a connection between industrial production of CO2 and rising temperature is vital for the justification of this gigantic power grab.

There is no point of no return. If there were, these people would promise to sit down and shut up on the day after we reach the point of no return. They have no intention of sitting down and shutting up. Ever.

"WOLF!"

Whenever you hear somebody refer to the looming point of no return, you can be sure that this person will never shut up. That is because there is no such thing as a point of no return in the thinking of anybody who cries "wolf!" by using the phrase.

I have spent my adult life listening to this nonsense. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has been talking about "five minutes to Armageddon" ever since 1947. Actually, the time remaining varies between two minutes and seven minutes. You can see the timeline here. It is a PR stunt. It keeps working for their fundraising, so they keep running it.

There is no clock for Armageddon that the public has access to. God has it; the rest of us don't. If Jesus said He didn't know, which He did, then certainly the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is not a reliable source.

It never ceases to amaze me that liberal hypesters keep getting away with invoking the point of no return. This is not limited to a particular liberal cause. A lot of them use it. The suckers keep writing checks when they receive the latest notification that, once again, we have almost reached the point of no return.

ACHILLES AND THE TORTOISE

I am reminded of Zeno's paradox. A tortoise is slowly moving forward. Achilles wants to catch the tortoise. In order to catch it, he must run. In order to reach the tortoise in the imminent future, he must run fast enough to get where the tortoise is right now. But the tortoise will have moved forward in the meantime. So, Achilles must keep running. He again reaches the point where the tortoise was two seconds ago, but the tortoise has still moved closer. Achilles can never catch the tortoise.

Similarly, Stephen Hawking, who has a theory of time nobody except Hawking understands, will never be able to get to the point of no return. It will keep moving forward on him. The point of no return is a moving target, much like the tortoise.

It is no doubt politically incorrect of me to point out that Stephen Hawking is stuck in a wheelchair, so he obviously is not going to catch the tortoise known as the point of no return. But even if he were as fast as Usain Bolt, he could not catch it.

The point of no return is a politically moving target. It always stays ahead of the small army of liberal sprinters who are trying to catch it, fundraising letter by fundraising letter.

In 3 1/2 years, the world will be that much closer to the point of no return. I guarantee you that the point of no return will have moved forward once again. It will still be out there in the mist, motivating donors to write another check.
