Better Passwords

I pick passwords that I can recall.

I take a phrase I won't forget. Then I use the first letter of each word. I don't forget.

I could use the phrase itself. It would be a long password.

"Not good enough!" That's what the "create account" software tells us.

The software is wrong.

It turns out that long phrases are better than short passwords with weird characters, capital letters, etc. We can't recall them. So, we rarely use them. It turns out this is wise.

Why did we ever think otherwise? Because of the federal government's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The bureaucrat who came up with the rule now admits that he knew almost nothing about password theory when he created the rule.

He has publicly apologized. It's about time.

Rule: better a longer password with a familiar phrase.
