How to "Buy" Significance in Life

Gary North

First, significance is not the same as fame. There is great confusion here. You can buy fame if you have enough money. That's why rich people are tempted to buy fame when thinking they are buying significance.

Second, significance, when accompanied by fame, is almost always an illusion.

Third, significance cannot be bought at a discount. Illusion can, however.

What is significance? You leave part of the world significantly better off than it would have been had you not achieved whatever it was that you achieved.

You can achieve significance somewhere. I call this niche significance.

Rich people want significance to match their wealth. This is why they are suckers for fame.

You can buy significance with money. But you must be content with invisibility. Jesus warned: Don't let the right hand know what the left hand does. Ignore his warning, and you are likely to buy fame rather than significance.

Almost anyone can buy significance with time. The question is: Significance for whom?

To maximize your significance per unit of time invested, you must match your personal gifts with personal needs of others. The closer the fit, the more significance you can have.

You have had inflow: gifts. The secret of significance is outflow: giving outward.

What difference can you make? Where? For how long?

You buy significance with time if you're short of money.
