This may seem like a silly tip. It isn't.
Three months ago, I was walking up the stairs. I was barefoot. I rammed my big right toe into the vertical slat of a stair. It really hurt.
The next day, the toenail turned black.
A few days later, it came off.
It has grown back to about 40%. It has ceased growing. This leaves the top of the tip exposed. Every time that I put on a sock, or a slipper, or a shoe, I get an annoying sensation. It's not pain, but it is very annoying. I fear that this condition is permanent.
If I had kept the toenail clipped, it would not have been jammed into my toe. This risk had never occurred to me.
Now you know.
