Mastery of a Tool: Scott Stoneman
Scott Stoneman was the most spectacular country/bluegrass fiddler of his generation. He was the son of "Pop" Stoneman, founder of the bluegrass group, the Stoneman Family or simply "the Stonemans."
In the early 1960's, he played with the Kentucky Colonels, whose guitarist was the equally gifted Clarence White. I discuss White here.
What you are about to see is beyond belief. He plays "Orange Blossom Special," a standard in the repertoire of every country fiddler. But how he played it was in no one else's repertoire. I post it here, not because I think my readers are all bluegrass music fans, but because they are fans of mastery of the tools of production. Showboating? You bet!
The guy holding the microphone is Franklin Delano "Del" Reeves. It was his show.
He died in 1973, the same year that White was run over in a parking lot by a drunk.
