Pentagon’s Study on Pentagon Studies Rejected as Useless

In an attempt to get a handle on the numerous studies commissioned by the Defense Department, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in 2010 commissioned a study on Pentagon studies. He wanted to find out what they cost.

Can you imagine this? The head of the Defense Department actually trying to find out something that was in the Pentagon’s budget? This was unheard of.

That study has now been released to the general public, if the general public cared. The review is still going on.

So, Congress, asked the General Accountability Office to look into the matter.

The GAO found only nine studies that had been scrutinized by the Pentagon review, but the military was unable to “readily retrieve documentation” for six of the reports.

The Department of Defense’s “approach is not fully consistent with relevant cost estimating best practices and cost accounting standards,” the GAO concluded. In fact, they often did not include items like manpower, the report found.

The Pentagon “partially concurs” with the GAO’s report.

Then there is the question of how much the study of studies cost. That information is not available.

So, the Pentagon will now have to commission a study of how much the study of studies cost. This won’t be cheap.
