In Wisconsin, you had better not weld together a sleek-looking sports car . . . unless it has a VIN number.
One car creator dared to put together a pair of Nissan Skylines. These are “vroom, vroom” cars. He was given a choice: crush them for scrap metal or go to jail.
The authorities caught the perpetrator in a sting operation. A Department of Transportation employee spotted the crime against humanity. He pretended to be a buyer.
The cars had no titles. They had no VINs. They were reported as illegal.
They were not stolen, you understand. They just had no VINs.
He offered to transport them out of state. The prosecutor said no deal.
Fraud is fraud. “If you do the crime, you do the time.” Or else crush the cars as an example to others.
He had purchased the cars as shells. Then he put them together. They had no tags. The owner mailed them later. He had the tags. But they were not in the car. They were . . . at home!
You expect leniency? For someone like this? You must be joking.
The man offered to pay the fines. No deal. He offered to help the authorities find buyers overseas. No deal.
He had spent years restoring them. This will send a message to people like him who prey upon the public.
Vintage cars need not be VINtage cars. If they are over 25 years old, they can be VINless. But these cars were only 17 years old.
