Never Pay Retail for a Funeral

Never pay retail for a funeral. Retail these days costs over $7,000.

Hold the funeral in your church or the deceased relative's church. Don't pay a funeral home.

If you don't belong to a church, rent a sanctuary on a Saturday afternoon.

Do not buy a casket from a funeral home. Shop for a casket. Better yet, have an emotionally uninvolved deacon shop for it. Start looking at Costco. Try to keep the price below $1,000.

Don't embalm the body. Have a closed-casket funeral.

Shop for a grave site now or when the relative seems terminal. Negotiate, or have a deacon negotiate. I plan to be buried in my church's graveyard. It has been there since 1850.
