From the campaign of 2012

At a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, Speaker of the House John Boehner was asked if he thought the Republican platform’s call to audit the Federal Reserve is a good idea.

The Speaker is no fool. When he is tossed a hand grenade, he flips it out the window.

He refused to answer. He said this year’s platform is no different from earlier ones.

Then he said that he has never read the platform. No one reads the platforms.

Let’s see. He knows this one is the same as earlier ones, because he has never read one. It makes sense to me!

He says there should be a one-page platform that people might possibly read. Maybe.

Party platforms function as sops thrown to fringe groups in the Party to let them pretend that they have clout. They have no clout.
