1,100 Inmates Collect Over $2 Million in Unemployment Insurance

In Chicago, inmates know how to work the system. One inmate collected $43,000 in unemployment benefits.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security officials has warned prisoners that they could face prosecution. But, being optimistic, the agency hopes that the inmates will return their ill-gotten gains voluntarily.

Of course. The milk of human kindness flows like a river in Illinois prisons.

The spokesman is not sure how many inmates will be prosecuted.

Let’s see. The inmates collected on average $2,000. Now, all the Department has to do is schedule 1,100 court dates. The court will have to supply courtroom space and lawyers from the District Attorney. The prisoners, being destitute, will have to be supplied with free lawyers.

This will be done to collect on average $2,000.

So, the Department will prosecute selectively, the spokesman says. I’ll bet.

Then there is the policing system of the unemployment bureaucracy. “People collecting unemployment benefits have to certify every two weeks they’re eligible. That includes showing they’re available to work and looking for work.” Did they check the addresses of the prisoners?

The system is stupid. It is nice that we get to see this once in a while. Nothing will change, but it provides entertainment.
