School nurses in England give injections to girls as young as 13. This has been going on for three years.
The implants, which prevent pregnancy for up to three years by releasing hormones into the blood, are inserted into girls’ arms. The injections are effective for up to three months.
If the girl refuses to let the nurse tell her parents, it is illegal for the nurse to tell her parents.
But what about parental rights? As one famous politician has said, “Are you serious?”
What do the injections do for sexually transmitted diseases? Subsidize them.
Then there is this. Sexual relations between unmarried children under age 16 is illegal? No matter. Free contraceptive injections do not encourage sexual promiscuity. That, at least, is the theory undergirding the policy of free contraceptives for 13-year-olds.
Some parents wanting an investigation are out of luck. There are often no records. ”The number of girls given implants and jabs is likely to be higher as many trusts claimed they did not keep records or said releasing information would breach patient confidentiality.” Then there are the free sexual health clinics. The girls can go there, too. These clinics are part of the National Health Service. They are not required to consult with parents.
Although teenage pregnancy rates in Britain have fallen to their lowest level since 1969, they are around twice as high as those in France and Germany and five times the rate in the Netherlands.
What is normal today would have been unthinkable in 1960.
What will 2030 bring?
