Midway: See It in a Theater

I went to see Midway on Thursday. It is a triumph.

I am something of a Battle of Midway fanatic. I even visited the library of the Naval Academy to research it. (It has decks, not floors, as a midshipman explained to me.)

The movie is accurate in most of the details. This is the most accurate historical movie I have ever seen. It covers the high points. It also gets the background correct.

The 1976 movie was mediocre. This is nothing like the old one.

The professional reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 43. The audience gave it a 92. Here is a good rule of thumb: when the professionals on Rotten Tomatoes pan a movie, and the paying attendees give it a rave, see the movie.

Midway is a big screen movie. You need to see it with the sound system cranked up more than your wife would tolerate in your living room.

Tell her you are going to take her to the movies tonight. Remind her that she made you sit through Titanic. Now it's your turn.
