Donate Wisely

It's that time of the year again: tax-avoidance time.

One part of tax avoidance is forcing Uncle Sam to pony up money for your favorite charities. Every dollar that you give away is probably 25 cents or more that the federal government will not get its inefficient hands on.

If one of the charities is offering a donation-matching deal, take it.

"Teach a man to fish. . . ." If one of them helps families start a business, get out your checkbook.

If one of them teaches young people to think the way you think, get out your checkbook.

If one of them sent you a photo of a no-longer-starving child, put it lower on the list.

Small, struggling charities need your money more than large, established charities do. You will get more leverage from your donation.
