I just bought a desktop sound system for my computer. The thing is better than anything I would have imagined, yet it sells for $110, plus shipping, on Amazon. It's the Klipsch Promedia 2.1.
It comes with a 200-watt amplifier and a subwoofer. You will not need 200 watts.
I read that this unit is not as good as a high-end system. Sadly, neither are my ears. If you want to get depressed, see this chart on hearing loss by age.
By the time you can afford to buy a really great sound system, you've got AM-radio ears.
My ears are weak link in the system. My advice: "Don't pay extra if you can't hear the difference."
C/NET says the Logitech Z-2300 is better for the money, and it retails for $30 less. Maybe it is better. But I doubt that I could hear the difference.
In any case, it never ceases to amaze me how inexpensive and small a very good sound system is these days. Of couse, they all say "Made in China."
I live on my computer when I'm not reading a book. So, it paid me to upgrade my sound system. If I hear something, I might as well hear it right.
If you want to see a great music video, watch Kris Kristofferson's "This Old Road." The introductory interplay between the photo of a young Kristofferson and Lon Chaney's face from "Phantom of the Opera" says it all. Grim because true.
