Weight Training

I am a couch potato. Mashed.

This week, I had a weight training program designed for me by a specialist. There is a reason for this. There is a recent scientific study that I take seriously on the positive effects of weight training. The findings are amazing. Men in their 70s regained muscle structure of men in their 20s.

I have another motivation. My father, age 90, is now completely bent over. From his hips to his head, he walks with his torso parallel to the ground. This may be from osteoporosis. Yet he was on the swim team at UCLA. (His one story from that experience: a word of praise from his coach. "North, I have never seen anyone swim that slowly and still stay on top of the water.")

My program was designed by Gary DeMar. DeMar was #4 in the nation among high school shot putters in his senior year. That was almost four decades ago.

At age 57, he still does squats with 350-lb. weights on his shoulders.

In 2006, he went into training for two months to see if he could compete in the shot put for age category 55-59. He came in 8th in the nation.

I am trying to persuade him to produce a DVD on weight training for the Medicare set.

There comes a time when we had better face the reality of ageing. Pay now or pay later.
