Dealing With Setbacks
I have been speaking publicly for half a century. I am always impressed by a really effective speech or speaker.
I saw a speech recently that truly impressed me. It's on YouTube. It was Steve Jobs's speech to the 2005 graduating class at Stanford.
Most graduation speeches are platitudes mixed with failed attempts at humor. No one can remember one a day later, nor is anyone expected to. They are filler, often offered to very rich men, who are expected to reciprocate with very large donations.
Jobs's speech was a rare exception. He spoke of the three biggest setbacks in his life, all of which served as launching pads for the next stages of his success. His career was not a straight-line affair.
He mentions "Woz." That was Steve Wozniak, Apple's co- founder. Like Jobs, he dropped out of college. Unlike Jobs, he returned to earn a degree. We rarely hear about him. He has escaped the limelight. Smart.
