You can register to get your name off the lists that are made available by the major credit-rating agencies. The agencies have set up a simple site that lets you register: Optoutprescreen.

Because this site asks you to provide personal information, I checked it out. It appears to be legitimate.

Choose the permanent opt-out option at the bottom of the form.
