Netflix's New Free Service
November 5, 2007
=============================================================== I wish I had the self-discipline that author Douglas Southall Freeman had. He was the best allocator of time I have ever heard of. He did not waste any. I mean any!
I waste some time. I call this recreation. I usually waste it in the evening, when my efficiency fades. This way, it costs me less. I would not have produced much.
This leads me to Netflix. I belong.
I have begun using a new service at Netflix. I really like it. It's called Watch Instantly.
I can view a movie or, more likely, a documentary on- screen. It is delivered flicker-free. There are no freeze-ups.
I like documentaries. My wife likes movies. But I control the Netflix account. So, she is forced to watch my documentaries.
A documentary is usually suitable a computer screen. They are not big-screen, high-definition items. They just convey information. I use them to get an overall view of something I'm interested in. Documentaries are good on presenting highlights in an interesting manner. I can decide whether I want to do more research. Also, they require less concentration. I usually stay awake. Reading a tightly written essay late at night is rarely productive, time-wise.
Netflix lets you watch free of charge one hour per month per dollar in your account. I have the $17 monthly account, so I can watch 17 hours of movies on my computer. That's plenty.
They don't let you view all their inventory on-screen. But the list is growing all the time.
Now my wife will get to watch movies. I may even order some of those French movies with subtitles that she enjoys. Then I'll go in my office and watch a documentary.
