Job Application Strategy

Gary North

I got this tip from a 20-year-old college student. It is really great.

The key to a job application is to know a whole lot about the company before you contact the company. If you are applying to three firms, multiply this requirement by three.

How can you get this information, preferably for free? With Google Alerts.

Pick a company. Pick some aspect of the company -- something related to your job search. Tell Google how often you want to be alerted to stories that combine both topics. A list of links will be sent to you on schedule.

This tip came from Tracy Hooten, a senior in petroleum engineering at the University of Texas, Austin -- the right major at the right school in the right state. She is the co-creator of a great blog site, www.studenttabletpc.com. This site covers a fabulous new development, portable computers that let you take notes by hand without a keyboard. I plan to buy one in the next 30 days.
