Your Paycheck

Are you being paid as much as you are worth? Don't assume that you are. The longer you have had your job, the more likely that you are underpaid.

Employers pay more up front in order to attract good people. Then they wait for spending patterns to take over. Employees spend to whatever they earn after taxes. They do not save. They do not avoid debt. They spend every dime and borrow.

When you have no savings, no savings plan, and a lot of consumer debt, you lose your mobility. That means you are not in a position to risk losing your job. At that point, raises cease.

To find out if you are paid too little, monitor whatever industry sources publish "Help Wanted" ads. Find out what wages are in your area. Go onto Monster.com and other sites. Be sure your resumé is out there. You can use an assumed name if you make this fact clear in advance.

Be sure your resumé has a link to a Web page that has more details about what you can do and are willing to do to get hired. Write your resumé the way you would write an ad for your services.

If you want to write a good resumé, start here.
