Cheap Breakfasts
November 22, 2008
For most large families, breakfasts are needlessly expensive. Here are two ways to improve nutrition and save money.
First, never buy another processed cereal in a brightly colored box. The profit margin on popular boxed cereals is very high. This is why supermarkets devote so much shelf space to them.
Instead, buy a large box of oatmeal, preferably the store's in-house brand.
I prefer oatmeal uncooked with milk. It's fast, cheap, and has texture. Or just cook it.
When kids eat oatmeal, you can monitor the sweetener. This is not true with pre-sweetened cereals, which are loaded with sugar.
Second, substitute eggs for meat. This saves money, yet it provides protein. Scrambled eggs are fast to make.
A good rule on saving money in a supermarket is this: "If it has a brightly colored box, don't buy it." The bright colors are substitutes for quantity. You can't eat colors.
