Happy 400th Birthday to John Milton
December 9, 2006
Four centuries ago today, John Milton was born. He became a Puritan defender of free speech. He wrote epic poetry that college graduates pretend to have read. In 1959, I read Samson Agonistes, a poem about Samson's blindness. Milton had gone blind. Our professor told us the poem had nothing to do with Milton's blindness. Right!
I transferred to another university the next semester. I have never regretted that decision.
Anyway, happy birthday to John.
