Christmas is over. The bills will start coming due in a week. For some people, that will be a day of reckoning.

January women's magazines at the supermarket check-out lines will feature ads on losing weight. It's time to put your budget on a diet, too.

Here is one of the best articles I have read on cutting back on spending. It's rational. It's also real- world.

The key is to identify your wasteful spending. Hers included Starbucks. She bought an espresso/latte machine and now fixes her own coffee in the morning. It saves her $3.50 a cup. Savings like this add up.

This is the correct approach. Everyone has luxuries he does not really need. Find a less expensive substitute.

Start with little things. Just keep cutting.
