Craigslist is a great tool for finding used items for sale locally. It's free to post ads in most cities. There are a lot of ads.
The problem with Craigslist is the value of your time. You have to spend a lot of time searching posts that have nothing to do with what you're looking for. I use the highlighting option in Google Toolbar, but searching is still slow.
Now a site is available that lets to specify what you're looking for close to a main city. You can set the number of miles from the city you're willing to drive to look at some item.
