The American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) released a report, "What Will They Learn: A Report on the General Education Requirements at 100 of the Nation's Leading Colleges and Universities." It's grim.
It checked the results of 100 major universities. How well do their graduates perform on basic tests? Poorly. The schools are failing to deliver.
He reports on results reported by the National Center for Education Statistics. About 30% of graduates can read a complex book.
A Conference Board report says only 24% of employers find graduates excellently prepared.
The American Council of Trustees and Alumni graded the 100 surveyed colleges and universities on their general education requirements. Forty-two institutions received a "D" or an "F" for requiring two or fewer subjects. Twenty-five of them received an "F" for requiring one or no subjects. No institution required all seven.
Paying big tuitions made no difference, the ACTA report concludes.
