Google is basic to life on the Web. I use Google's advanced search as my home page. The advanced search page makes it easy to do phrase searches. I use this box:

this exact wording or phrase

This automatically places the quotation marks around the phrase, making it specific.

I also use this:

But don't show pages that have.... any of these unwanted words

These options barely touch the Google tool box. Here is a page that lists 20 of them:
