Advice Sought: The Best Structure for a New, Free Department on This Site

Gary North

Oct. 31, 2009

In honor of Luther's nailing the 95 theses on the church door on October 31, 1517, I ask a question. But first. . . .

Luther was by far the most successful pamphleteer in history. Within a month of nailing his theses on the church door, printers were selling translated versions in German. They of course never paid him any royalties. He saw the opportunity immediately. They could keep the money; he would reform the church. He did not reform the church, but he transformed northern Europe.

I see the light!

The light is YouTube, PDFs, and a free department on this site.

I will teach an economics course. YouTube videos are limited to 10 minutes. I know that 2 to 3 minutes are the ideal length to get viewers. We live in the sound bite era. So, my plan is to post a series of 3-minute videos with my conclusions on each topic, not my logic. I will use Open Office's presentation program to outline the script. I will post this on-screen. I will narrate it.

At the end of each video, I will post a shortened URL link that directs the viewer to a page on this site. On the page will be the embedded YouTube video, just in case Google directs someone to the page. There will also be an embedded video of a 25-minute presentation. I will post the original on Blip.tv. It's free for non-commercial videos. Same strategy: post a link back to the page.

On each page, there will be a link to a PDF chapter in one of my books. The person can read the full presentation, with footnotes.

Finally, I'll include a printed summary on the page, probably the conclusion from the book's chapter.

I am thinking of posting an audio file that people can download and listen to during drive time. I don't know if I can post a downloadable audio file for free: bandwidth issues.

My main target audiences are home school students and people driving to and from work. I would also like to get long-haul truckers listening.

Now for my question. Is this the way you would like to learn a subject? I am open to suggestions. Different people learn in different ways. I may be missing something.

If you are a site member, post an answer in the main Q&A forum. Subject box: Video Course.

If you are not a site member, send me an email. Put Video Course in the subject box. garynorth@garynorth.com.

Nov. 2. Several people have said that I should offer questions and answers. This is good advice. I will ask several questions at the beginning of each video/audio presentation. To get the answers, a viewer must go to the lesson page on my site.

I have located several sites that offer free audio file hosting.

I hope the one I select will not go out of business. I would have to upload everything to a new site, plus replace every link on every lesson page. That would be depressing.
