Retirement/Convalescent Homes as Recruiting Centers for Prayer Warriors

Gary North

Churches sometimes have Sunday evening meetings at retirement homes. Maybe an assistant pastor conducts the meetings. Maybe a layman does. A senior pastor in a large church rarely does.

The attendees vary in awareness. But most of them pray during the week. Their prayer time may be systematic, as it was for my father and mother. He died in 2008. My mother is still alive.

Other residents are less organized. But this has to do with the fact that they do not have responsibilities. They are in American retirement mode: nothing to do of any importance. They are in coasting mode. They are waiting for death.

We are all waiting for death. Are we actively waiting or passively waiting?

If churches that conducted Sunday services at retirement centers had a systematic program of daily sustained prayer, they could recruit these attendees into a network. There would be weekly handouts for specific projects.

Some of these people could pray more than an hour a day. They have to have specifics to keep their prayers focused. Weekly lists could provide such specifics.

These people have a lot of time on their hands. Nobody pays much attention to them. They perceive that they are being cared for. They know they are a net liability economically to their families or the state or both. This is acceptable to some. It is not acceptable to activists.

Churches should design programs that recruit these activists into active service.
