ShopSavvy: A Great Tool for Hagglers

Gary North

Why pay retail? Why not haggle? This was the advice in a recent Washington Post article.

The recession has changed the attitudes of millions of buyers. They now ask for discounts.

Stores are facing competition from the Web. People know about bargains.

A customer who is standing in front of a salesman, who is ready to ring up a sale, is in a strong bargaining posituon. He is not a tire-kicker. He is ready to buy. The salesman is so close to a sale. And then. . . . "I'm ready to buy if I get 25% off." Oh, no. Another one!

They used to be rare. Not any more.

You don't owe the seller what the price tag says, unless you are in Wal-Mart or Target, where clerks are clerks, not salespeople.

If you use a smart phone, download this application: ShopSavvy. It lets you take a picture of some item's bar code. Then it downloads the best price in your area. You can now tell the salesman: "Look, I can buy this for [cheaper] right down the street. But I'll buy it here if you will match the price." Download ShopSavvy here:
