Identifying Your Church's Unique Service Proposition

Gary North

If Clarence the angel ran your church through the scenario in It's a Wonderful Life, would your community have been noticeably different? If not, your church has a problem. It is time to rectify this problem.

What is your church's USP (unique service proposition)? Pastors rarely know. Members rarely know.

If your church doesn't know, how will non-members know? How will visitors know?

Pastors may think they know, but they have never surveyed members to find out. The survey should ask:

1. Why did you visit this church?
2. Why did you come back?
3. Is there one thing about this church that you would quit if this changed?
4. What do you tell friends is the #1 advantage in this church?

They will make up something for #4. They don't mention the church to their friends.

A survey is an obvious step in promoting growth, but churches do not take surveys. I think pastors don't want to know. They might have to change.

The church's elected leaders should hold at least two Saturday morning meetings to discuss the results of the survey. They should concentrate on this issue: What is the #1 benefit this church offers to visitors and new members?

After this is agreed on, they should attempt to find ways to accentuate whatever this is. This will be the topic of meetings on Saturday mornings 3 and 4.

You say your church has never done this. Why does this not surprise me?
