The Keynes Project: Austrian School Scholars vs. John Maynard Keynes
March 6, 2010
Next weekend, I will be speaking at the Austrian Scholars Conference sponsored by the Mises Institute. My topic: Why Keynesian economic theory is vulnerable as never before, and how Austrian School scholars can take advantage of this unique opportunity.
You may think, "But Keynesians are in charge in the post-2008 era." This is correct. This is why they are vulnerable. They are claiming success for the recovery. When this solution fails, they will be exposed as defenders of a false and destructive theory.
At that point, critics will appear. The Austrian school has made the best case against Keynes for 70 years. It is time to prepare for a frontal assault intellectually.
I will be discussing my strategy and my tactics in front of at least a hundred scholars. This will be the hard core of the resistance movement. I hope to enlist them in a crusade.
I have posted this page as a beginning: www.KeynesProject.com. I hope to expand this into a blog. The Mises Institute has set up an "email address required" forum where participants can share their project ideas.
This project mandates the division of labor. I will do my best to serve as a kind of academic tactician. But the heavy lifting must be done by younger scholars who can devote paid years to the project. They are supposed to publish.
There is already a large body of books and materials critical of Keynes. The Misis Institute has posted many of these out-of-print books. But there is a gap after the early 1960's. The older Austrians stopped writing. There were almost no younger ones until the mid-1970's. Now these mid-1970's recruits are retiring. It is time to rally the younger ones.
