My 2004 Book on Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ Is Now Available on This Site. It's Titled The War on Mel Gibson.
Mel Gibson was subjected to abuse by the media for his movie . . . until the day it opened. It grossed $23 million in one day. From that day forth, the Left shut up. Money talks.
The Left's plan had been clear for almost a year: attack the movie as anti-Semitic. What only a few of the more forthright columnists admitted in print was this: the movie was anti-Semitic because it used the New Testament's verbatim texts to identify the source of Jesus' execution, namely, the Jewish leaders. Herod simply folded under political pressure.
The advance publicity for the film that had been provided by the Left made Gibson a very rich man very fast -- within a month. The movie had been produced on a shoestring budget: about $30 million. The publicity costs were estimated at $25 million. The publicity provided by the Left was worth at least three times what Gibson spent on publicity -- probably four times. Word of mouth provided the rest.
In my book, I explain what the fight was all about, and why the liberal media's plans backfired so completely. I also explain the background of the Left's takeover of Hollywood, and why that strangle hold is now broken -- a fact proved in full public view by Gibson.
