Galt's Gulch for the Middle Class: A Safe Haven, Tax Haven, and Weather Haven That the Bureaucrats Have Long Forgotten

Galt's Gulch is the hideaway for the super-rich in Atlas Shrugged. It actually exists: Jupiter Island, Florida.

If you can afford a home on Jupiter Island, as Tiger Woods can, then move there. The elite live there. There is no state income tax. The weather is good. But it is not cheap. Forbes ranked it as by far the most expensive zip code in America.

But what if you can't afford it? What if you are looking for a small town that is off the beaten path . . . and will forever be off the beaten path?

What if you hate cold weather, hate hot weather, and love fishing?

What if you don't want to pay a state income tax?

What if you want to live where there is no possibility of air pollution -- ever?

What if you want a fall-back safe haven within a couple of miles -- one that is truly beyond the reach of America's bureaucratic system?

What if you want a legal border in between you and all American bureaucrats? They can legally get to you, but they won't bother. It's not worth the trouble.

What if you want to buy a house that a middle-class family can afford (at least for now)?

What if you are ready to buy a place to retire to, but which can be easily rented out until then?

If the rich ever spot this one, you can forget about buying there. But, so far, it remains invisible.

I have known about it for 35 years. I lived two American towns away from it. No one ever mentioned the place. It was 45 miles away. It might as well have been in a foreign country . . . which, in a way, it was.

It has remained unspoiled. I find this hard to believe.
